Thoracic surgery is the medical specialty that treats and repairs organs located in the thorax, or chest. The thoracic cavity lies between the neck and the diaphragm, and contains the heart and lungs (cardiopulmonary system), the esophagus, trachea, pleura, mediastinum, chest wall, and diaphragm.
In the practice of this specialty, several techniques have been developed in order to treat hyperhidrosis, which is a generalized or localized excessive sweating. Human body sweats as a normal bodily function in order to keep itself cool. Patients who experience hyperhidrosis sweat in excess of that needed to properly regulate their body temperature. This can have severe consequences on a person's self esteem and social relationships. Surgical treatment of hyperhidrosis consists in clipping sympathetic nerves (which control sweat production), significantly reducing or abolishing sweating.
