What is teeth whitening?

This is an odontological procedure intended to brighten up teeth colour, and to reduce or remove stains.

Why do teeth stain?

Dental pigmentation can have different causes, which can be classified in Internal and External. Internal causes usually include medications, such as certain antibiotics and fluoride, during the first stages of dental growth. External causes are usually connected to nutrition habits, and can include habits like excessive coffee or tea drinking, or patients who are exclusively vegetarian. Habits like smoking or hewing tobacco and cigarrets can cause dental stains and darkening.

How does it work?

Externally originated pigmentation is easier to remove with conventional treatments, while internal stains usually need additional treatments, in order to achive the desired teeth color.

In these procedures, different concentrations of Hydrogen Peroxide and Carbamide Peroxide.

Peroxide concentration is related to the type of bleaching or the treatment duration, also depenging on where the treatment is done: Home or  in desntist's office.

In home dental whitnening treatments usually take from two weeks to a month, and are made with low concentration materials. In-office whitenings take from 30 minutes to 1 hour, and are made with high concentration products. These products can be used in combination with heat, a special light, and/or a laser. The light and/or heat accelerate the whitening process. Results are seen in only one treatment session.
